The mountain group called Pale di San Martino falls entirely within the Italian speaking area of the Dolomites. It wouldn't hurt to familiarise yourself with some basic Italian before your visit as many from the older generation don't speak any other language. Regardless, it will certainly earn you some brownie points and a warmer welcome! If you need directions or other helpful information the local tourism office is usually well staffed with younger people who do speak multiple languages.
This hiking tour takes you to some of the best photographic spots to capture the majestic north side of the Pale di San Martino. First, it leads you to the top of Castellaz, 2333 m. Castellaz (named for a local word meaning 'ugly castle' - you make your own judgment!) was the theater of the Grande Guerra 1915-1918 (WWI). In memory of lost lives, a statue of the Cristo Pensante (Meditating Christ) was erected on top of this fortified peak.
The ascent to Castellaz is steep and a bit rocky in the final part but manageable for most people, weather permitting.
From there, the trail follows the North ridge to visit the caves used during the war and then descends in the direction of the Costazza, continuing on a rather flat path around the base of this peak until reaching Baita Segantini. It is difficult to find a rifugio with more spectacular scenery. Stop here to enjoy a tasty lunch or a hot cup of coffee and some delicious sweets if you arrive in the afternoon.
